At Manoverboard we’ve historically sent out bird-themed direct mailers around the holidays. In 2020 we pulled out all the stops and I designed this die-cut paper sculpture kit which we mailed to clients and friends, complete with instructions on how to assemble the sculpture pictured below.
About the project
This project was a lot of fun and a great challenge because it combined so many different skills—design, illustration, three-dimensional thinking and pre-press. I was able to take ownership of the project from start to finish and the end result is a piece of sculptural art that anyone can make at home.

The design process
I started with some rough 3D paper mockups to plan out the overall form. Then I refined my shapes and artwork by combining rough illustrations with found photos of chickadees. Then I finished up by doing final illustrations, and planning out the die-lines so the shapes could be punched out. The final step was to lay out all the pieces flat on a page that would fit in a standard envelope in a nice way so it looked just as good unassembled as it did put together.
