Gornisht Vol.2 is the second installment of a collaborative, limited edition art book project created by Andrew Boardman. With each edition, the zine invites several artists to contribute a piece based on a common theme, and all pieces are printed on a Risograph. The theme of this issue is ‘tree’.

About my piece

When I was invited to collaborate on this project, I wanted my piece to have a clear and easy-to-follow narrative. Forests are complex ecosystems full of life that must share finite resources and find balance. So are the cities most of us live in.

My piece contrasts a greedy forest against a small and confident evergreen. It is meant to serve as an allegory for the pursuit of wealth and status, reminding us to reflect upon how we find meaning, purpose and peace in a busy world.

About production

From a technical standpoint, the pieces were all designed to be run off of a Risograph printer. Beloved for their unique print quality and the strict constraints, it’s a fun medium for any designer to play with. The design was limited to three spot colours, and the selection of paper was up to us. I chose a text weight Kraft-Tone stock from French Paper, and decided to use all three colours available. We had to create all of our own separations manually, so my experience with screen-printing in high school came in handy.
